NuvaRing Pulmonary Embolisms

July 13, 2012

Although all combination hormonal contraceptives carry with them various risks and side effects, the NuvaRing has recently been the subject of much litigation. Lawsuits filed against the makers of the vaginal ring allege that its use has resulted in a wide range of devastating medical problems, including pulmonary embolisms, to a large number of women. The NuvaRing was first approved by the FDA in 2001, although it was not marketed in the US until 2002. At present, around 1.5 million women use the Nuva Ring as their form of contraceptive.

What are NuvaRing Pulmonary Embolisms?

Use of the NuvaRing has been shown to increase the risk of Pulmonary Embolisms as well as other side effects. A NuvaRing pulmonary embolism happens when a blood clot forms and then travels to the lungs. Once it is in the lungs, it then causes the blockage of one or more arteries. Oftentimes pulmonary embolisms occur as the result of NuvaRing Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT). Deep Vein thrombosis occurs when blood clots form in the veins furthest from the body’s surface. NuvaRing Pulmonary Embolisms can be fatal.

Other NuvaRing Complications

Like pulmonary embolisms, many of the other NuvaRing Complications also occur due to blood clots. Even women who have no prior personal or family history of blood clotting problems are still affected by health issues while using the ring. The NuvaRing has been linked to an increased risk of the following: blood clots, strokes and heart attacks, heart disease, high blood pressure, breast cancer, cancer of the reproductive organs, liver tumors, and gallbladder disease. Additionally, this type of combination hormone vaginal ring has also been linked to a long list of less severe complications as well. If you are using the NuvaRing and experience any of the following signs or symptoms, seek medical attention immediately:

  • Breathlessness
  • Chest Pains
  • Tension in Chest
  • Quickened Breathing
  • Coughing up blood
