NuvaRing Side Effects

NuvaRing is a once-a-month contraceptive that consists of a small plastic ring that is inserted into the vagina and remains there for a three week period. But since NuvaRing was introduced to the market, users have reported more such side effects than are usually seen with other hormonal forms of birth control. NuvaRing releases a combination of ethinyl estradiol, a form of the hormone estrogen, and etonogestral. Etonogestral is an active metabolite of desogestrel, a form of the hormone progestin. In 2003 the New England Journal of Medicine published two studies that concluded that the use of low-estrogen oral contraceptives containing the progestin desogestrel significantly increases the risk of venous thromboembolism, a potentially fatal type of blood clot, more than low-estrogen birth control pills containing levonorgestrel. NuvaRing releases approximately 120 micrograms of etonogestral - an active desogestral metabolite - per day, a relatively high dose of this dangerous hormone. NuvaRing Side Effects

NuvaRing side effects have increasingly been reported in women throughout the United States. Side effects of Nuva Ring include a higher risk of venous thrombosis (blood clot). The side effects of Nuva Ring can increase based on several health and risk factors. Increased risks include: women over 35 years of age, diabetes, smoking more than 15 cigarettes a day, and high level of blood cholesterol or fat.

As early as 1995 the FDA and the drug companies were aware of the increased risk of combination oral contraceptives containing desogestrel. In an FDA statement regarding oral contraceptives and the risk of blood clots they said: The use of combined oral contraceptives has long been known to be associated with an increased risk of blood clots. In the new unpublished studies, the overall reported risk is lower than that reported in previous studies, but the new studies indicate about a two-fold increase in the risk of venous blood clots associated with Contraceptives products containing desogestrel and gestodene as compared to products containing older progestins.
