Patients receiving dialysis treatment using a popular hemodialysis product, GranuFlo Dry Acid Concentrate, are at a significantly higher risk of death and complications than patients who receive treatment using other similar products. Fresenius Medical Care, the German Medical Device company responsible for the creation and distribution of the dialysis product has had knowledge of the dangers associated with GranuFlo (and a liquid acid concentrate NaturaLyte) since at least November of 2011. Alarmingly, at that time Fresenius sent out an internal email memo regarding these dangers citing the number of heart attacks following GranuFlo at 941 in company owned treatment centers alone. However, GranuFlo is also used in the treatment of at least 100,000 dialysis patients in other treatment centers.

Dialysis Death Lawsuits

The families of many GranuFlo death victims frequently choose to file a GranuFlo Death Lawsuit against Fresenius. These GranuFlo death lawsuit claims seek financial damages in response to all of the emotional, physical, and financial suffering caused by these dialysis products. When a medical product results in the death of a loved one, it is much more difficult to go through knowing that the company providing the product was well aware of its potential risks and dangers. Fresenius chose only to alert its own dialysis doctors rather than notify all of the physicians and patients receiving care with its products.

FDA Dialysis Recall

In the spring of 2012, the US Food & Drug Administration recalled several of the Fresenius Medical Care dialysis products that had been responsible for the large number of deaths. These two products were: GranuFlo Dry Acid Concentrate and NaturaLyte Liquid Acid Concentrate. Both of these dialysis products contain ingredients that the body converts to bicarbonate. Improper administration of these products can result in a “bicarbonate overdose” in which the body experiences metabolic alkalosis. Metabolic alkalosis is responsible for the dialysis deaths that occur from sudden cardiac arrest.
