What is GranuFlo?

GranuFlo is a dialysis solution product manufactured and marketed by Fresenius Medical Care (FMC), the leading supplier of dialysis products and services worldwide. GranuFlo is a powder of concentrated acid that allows a treatment center to mix their own solutions and save in shipping costs. Unfortunately, errors in missing the solution result in high bicarbonate levels in dialysis patients. Although the company operates many of its own dialysis treatment centers, it also sells its products and solutions to other clinics as well. The dangers associated with GranuFlo and NaturaLyte (both Fresenius dialysis products) has resulted in deaths as well as the filing of many lawsuits.

Does GranuFlo cause Dialysis Deaths?

GranuFlo solution has been linked to an increase risk of death when compared to other dialysis treatments because it substantially elevates bicarbonate levels in patients during treatment. It is believed that patients being treated with GranuFlo are up to 6 times more likely to experience a heart attack than patients treated with other Dialysis solutions. Cardiac (heart attack) deaths are the leading cause of death in dialysis patients. GranuFlo was recalled by the United States FDA in 2012 after being linked to all of the following:

  • Heart Attacks
  • Cardiac Arrest
  • Metabolic Alkalosis
  • Myocardial Infarctation
  • Low blood Pressure
  • Stroke
  • Death

GranuFlo Dialysis Death Lawsuit

It has not yet been determined exactly how many deaths and injuries Fresenius and Granuflo have been responsible for to date. However, investigations by the US Food and Drug Administration suggest that Fresenius Medical Care was aware of the risks of their dialysis solutions as early as 2010 and chose only to alert their own doctors and clinics. In 2010, Fresenius was aware of the cardiac deaths of 941 dialysis patient in their own clinics alone. As a result of this deception and cover-up, many GranuFlo victims and their families have chosen to pursue litigation against FMC by filing a GranuFlo Dialysis Death Lawsuit.
