Combination contraceptives, including the NuvaRing, can affect the way that blood clots in the body. Because of this property, it is not surprising that the NuvaRing has been linked to an elevated risk of a number of blood clot-related complications, including deep vein thrombosis. Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is a medical definition given to a blood clot that forms inside of veins that are deep below the surface of the body. Usually DVT takes place in the leg, but it can also occur at other locations in the body. The danger in deep vein thrombosis is that these clots can break apart and travel through the blood stream, causing a pulmonary embolism or other serious injuries.

NuvaRing Deep Vein Thrombosis Studies

There are two conflicting studies in existence regarding the NuvaRing and its various blood clot risks, including deep vein thrombosis. According to a study that was reimbursed by the company PROFITING from the NuvaRing, there was “no increased blood clot risk” in comparison with combination oral contraceptives. However, an independently funded study published by the BMJ that received no money from Merck, discovered 90% increased risk of blood clot-related complications when comparing the NuvaRing against other oral combination contraceptives. Hopefully, these conflicting study results and the possible bias in the first study will prompt the US Food and Drug Administration to take a closer look at the NuvaRing and conduct their own literature review.

NuvaRing Deep Vein Thrombosis Lawsuits

Many women who used the NuvaRing for contraceptive purposes and experienced side effects, like deep vein thrombosis, do not believe that they were adequately warned of the increased risks prior to using the device. If they had been clearly informed of the risks and dangers, they would have chosen an alternative method. A NuvaRing Lawsuit claim typically is filed in response to an adverse effect and asserts that the company behind the product failed in its responsibility to properly evaluate the risks and pass these risks along to prospective consumers. Some lawsuits also claim that the company actively tried to distort the safety of the product.
